The Vietnam War, although a major event in America's history, that created much debate itself, contained two major events, the My Lai Massacre and the Tet Offensive, that ratcheted up the issue of distrust of the US military and government that made Americans question the country's role and further intensified the argument of whether the Vietnam war was a place for American soldiers or not.
